History of Methodist Sri Lanka
Rooted in Faith, Serving with Love
Methodism in Sri Lanka traces its roots to the early 19th century when British Methodist missionaries arrived on the island. The mission officially began in 1814 with the arrival of Rev. Thomas Coke, often referred to as the “Father of Methodist Missions,” along with a dedicated team of missionaries. Although Rev. Coke passed away during the journey, his vision and commitment inspired the others to carry on the mission.
The Methodist Church initially focused on establishing schools, translating the Bible into local languages, and promoting education and spiritual growth. Missionaries worked closely with local communities, especially in areas like Jaffna, Batticaloa, and Colombo. They introduced innovative methods of worship and emphasized the importance of personal faith and moral living.
